The agricultural character of Matale

Matale is the northernmost of the three districts in Sri Lanka's Central Province. Official and research sources describe a landscape that changes from rugged and hilly southern areas toward flatter and generally drier northern areas.

Because elevation, rainfall, terrain and soils vary, 'Matale origin' should not be treated as one uniform growing condition. Responsible origin information should connect each crop or estate to a more specific general area while protecting private access details.

Sri Lanka's Department of Census and Statistics identifies agriculture as an important part of the district economy and lists pepper, cloves, coffee, cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg and areca nut among its minor export crops. Paddy, vegetables, onions, coconut, tea and fruits also appear across different parts of the district.
