MATALE FIELD NOTES
K1’s estate story leads to Matale, Sri Lanka. For this first issue, our field notes begin with a way of looking: carefully, with questions, and with an awareness that a working landscape changes through the year.
Start at ground level. How is water moving through the site? What grows between the cultivated plants? Look at the shape of a leaf, then at the space around the plant. Ask which decisions are seasonal and which are part of longer-term care.
A useful field notebook records the date and place before it records an impression. It distinguishes what was seen from what was explained, and leaves a question open when the answer needs checking. A photograph becomes more valuable when we know what it shows.
These habits matter at home too. Return to the same garden corner through the seasons. Notice what changes. Curiosity often begins with something familiar seen more closely.
K1’s Matale programme is developing, with guided visits subject to confirmation. Weather, crop work and safety shape what can be offered. Matale’s estate story should be read separately from the Kotmale origin of the current K1 Ceylon coffee. [8, 14]
